Amtrak's Chicago Union Station (CUS) is the nation's 3rd busiest rail station, and the busiest in Chicago. In 2012, the City of Chicago completed a CUS master plan which identified 14 specific improvements to improve circulation and safety, increase train and passenger capacity, enhance customer experience, and improve intermodal connectivity. These were further advanced to preliminary design, and now Amtrak and its partners are currently looking for opportunities to move individual projects to full design and eventually construction.

Amtrak has also initiated a Master Development Program at its major stations to attract world-class developers, investors, architects and engineers to maximize the value of Amtrak's portfolio of real estate assets at and around its largest stations. CUS is the first of our stations to embark on this public-private partnership.

The presentation will summarize both of these immense undertakings.

    • Key legislative leaders -- from both sides of the political aisle - will join us for a panel discussion covering infrastructure funding, licensure and other issues important to engineers and architects. All are important decision-makers sitting on major committees and representing Chicago and surrounding areas. Engineers, Public Works Directors, Planners and Architects won't want to miss this engaging discussion about what's really going on in Springfield. Kim Robinson, Ex. Dir. of ISPE, will chair the event and get the ball rolling. Each legislator will offer his or her thoughts about issues confronting design professionals in Illinois. We expect a robust Q & A session, so bring your questions!

March PDH Luncheon

PDH Luncheon

March 27, 2018

11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Roditys Restaurant in Greek Town

You are invited to join fellow engineers for the Chicago Chapter ISPE's March PDH Luncheon. Guest speaker for this event will be Alan Phelps, a water/wastewater infrastructure engineer with Baxter & Woodman, Inc. with a strong passion for international development work, specifically through water supply projects.

Wema Children's Centre and Highway Academy is a boarding school and orphanage for local children in a village in Western Kenya. With the help of Wema Children, Inc. and a local contractor, the school received a water borehole which would provide them with clean drinking water. Unfortunately, soon afterward, the well became contaminated, infecting 50 children with typhoid. The well had to be decommissioned. The following year, Alan Phelps met a friend of Wema's medical director. Alan followed up with the connection, learned about the issue at Wema, and put the project through Engineers Without Borders' Engineering Service Corps program. After spending a year building a team and working with Wema Children, Inc. and the local school directors, the EWB team designed a water treatment solution and traveled there to successfully implement the design. This success, however, was also met with significant challenges from inception all the way to implementation. Learn how a group of mostly strangers became a determined engineering team, most who have never worked in Africa before, that managed to overcome each technical and cultural challenge that persisted all the way until the last day of construction and ultimately arrived at a successful implementation.

Allen Pheleps has a BS/C&EE from UIUC and MS/CE from the University of Minnesota. He has held several active leadership roles in the Engineers Without Borders Chicagoland Professional Chapter including the lead role for the Wema Well Repair Program and helping the Wema Children's Centre with ongoing water supply needs and an exciting new solar power initiative.

Cost to attend is $35 for members and $40 for non-members. Attendees are eligible to receive 1 PDH. We look forward to your participation in this event.

We will learn how to evaluate life cycle factors, key considerations of proper subbase performance, and methods of infiltration. Also, gain insight into important factors when evaluating void ratios, product strength, and product application.
